If you have any questions about this aspect of the club, you can contact and we will be happy to help you !

What is judo?

Judo is an Olympic sport created in Japan in 1882.  Judo means ‘the gentle way’.  It’s a fun, physical activity for all ages, abilities and body shape.  It involves no kicking or punching and the aim is to physically outmaneuver and throw your partner using skillful throwing techniques and, when fighting on the ground, using elbow locks and strangles to obtain a submission.

Classes will be aimed to suit all abilities and everyone will progress at a rate that suits them as they work through the British Judo Association grading syllabus.  Apart from having a lot of fun, students will develop confidence, coordination, and balance.  Judo is the perfect activity for developing all round physical fitness, improving aerobic capacity, flexibility, stamina, and strength.

The club will run every Tuesday evening between 6pm to 7:30pm in the sports hall.  The sessions will be lively, good fun and everyone will be well supported and looked after.

As a University Judo Club member, you can take advantage of the British Judo Association (BJA) Student Voucher Scheme (SVC).  The one-off payment entitles you to a discounted BJA annual membership, a judo suit, and your first judo grading.  The SVC costs £20 and forms can be obtained from the Coaches.  Once you have completed these and sent them to the BJA they will arrange for your license and judo suit to be sent to you.  GK Unions have now agreed to charge just £35 for all your training for the remainder of the academic year in order to support the opening of the new judo club.  That’s £55 for everything you need and for all your training the rest of the academic year.

Your first session will be for free !

We hope to see you on Tuesday’s from 6pm to 7:30pm
