Following an extensive refurbishment programme and a successful first three months GK Unions were excited to welcome the Vice Chancellors from the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent to officially launch the Student Hub.
Professor David Maguire and Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow were treated to a tour of the facilities and were greeted by students before revealing a plaque celebrating the combination of three years work from both Universities.
About the Student Hub Professor David Maguire said:” "The Student Hub is a major addition to the Medway Campus. We have achieved something here of a very high standard that will stand the test of time. It is another milestone in our journey to enhance student facilities and the all-round student experience, and we look forward to seeing the campus evolve still further in the years to come."
Sitting alongside the iconic Drill Hall Library the design of the Hub incorporates many of the building’s original features while introducing a modern flare which is being used to showcase what GK Unions students and staff have to offer.
Boosting student engagement on the Medway Campus is a priority for both partnership universities and GK Unions. Since opening the Hub has already been the host location for many student events. The first ever Refreshers’ Fair was extremely successful, largely thanks to the open area provided at the Hub. GK Unions’ first major event, featuring Tinchy Stryder, was attended by over 450 students showing the versatility of the space that’s been created. The new £3 million development is a focus point for the campus and has added a real sense of community to the student experience.
The Student Hub has provided a vibrant and exciting social space which includes a brand new eatery and bar which has supplied employment for 34 students. The Hub has also introduced much needed study space, which has been vital to our students throughout the term.
Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow added “"This is a fantastic space and one that demonstrates how the partnership between universities and their student bodies is crucial in so many way. Our students are amazingly resourceful and this new Hub provides them with some incredible new opportunities to make the most of their time on the Medway Campus."
