On 21 November 2016, students of the School of Music and Fine Art were informed of the University of Kent’s proposal to close the School once all current students have completed their course and graduated. The University has stated that the School is no longer financially viable to remain open due to an inability to recruit enough students. The University has confirmed that teaching will continue for current Kent students studying SMFA courses however no further recruitment will take place from 2017.
We are extremely concerned by this news and appreciate that this will put some of our members in an uncertain position. Our priority therefore is to support SMFA students during this time. Our role is to represent SMFA students’ academic interests and ensure their views are considered throughout this process. We are meeting with students regularly and will ensure that students’ views are presented to University management.
We believe that the University should consider all possible options that would create a future for the School of Music and Fine Art, ensuring that the creative arts have a long term place on the campus.
A follow up meeting will be held for SMFA students on 28 November 2016. At this meeting, students will be informed of the University Council’s decision concerning the proposal. We will update you following this meeting.
Kent Union officers will be dedicating their time to supporting SMFA students. They will be holding a number of drop-in sessions on campus. If you have any questions for your officer team, or if there is anything you would like them to raise on your behalf, please contact KUMedway@kent.ac.uk.
