October 2019

It's a new Uni year and we're excited to welcome some of you back to Medway and some of you for the first time. GK Unions has a jam packed year ahead for you, we hope you get involved and make your uni experience the very best it can be.  Read on to find out just a bit about what's in store...

For advice we want the focus to be on students helping themselves and taking pro-active action with any issues they may be experiencing.  Therefore we would like our focus to be on:
  1. Maximise Student Finance England funding:  if you receive funding from Student Finance England make sure you are getting the maximum funding you are entitled to.  Check out our webpage for information and guidance and also what options are available if you are struggling financially.
  2. Register with a local GP:  If you haven’t already we recommend you register with a local GP if you live in Medway.  View our webpage for details of the GP nearest to campus and how to register.
  3. University of Kent Bursary:  All University of Kent students should check their Kent Financial Support Package eligibility here.  The process to receive an award should be automatic unless you:
  1. Live in social housing (or you lived in a social housing property before coming to university);
  2. Are a Care Leaver;
  3. Are a young independent student under 20;
  4. Are a carer;
  5. Are estranged from parents;
  6. Were living in a Foyer/were homeless before entering university.
If any of the above are applicable then you will need to apply direct to the university to be assessed.  Details on how to do this and the eligibility criteria for each category can be found here under the heading ‘eligibility criteria’.
NUS Delegate Elections - https://www.gkunions.co.uk/elections/

Are you interested in how universities are governed and making change at a National level?

The NUS National Conference is a 3-day conference where representatives from each student union affiliated with NUS are given the opportunity to represent student views to discuss, debate and vote on motions, in order to elect the political leaders of the organisation for the next year.

GK Unions is able to send one representative. Nominations are open now until Sunday 9th November and you can put yourself forward here. The voting will take place the following week online.

Volunteering: Christmas Shoe Box Appeal - https://www.facebook.com/events/2749174638435583/

By filling a shoebox with simple gifts you can bring some joy and laughter to a child or older person who would not otherwise receive presents this Christmas.

The Blythswood Care Shoe Box Appeal packs and sends shoeboxes full of toiletries, clothing, and gifts around the globe.

If you would like to get into the spirit of giving back this Christmas, please take part in one of our volunteer days with them. It only takes a few hours of your time and you can make a huge difference to the lives of others. The dates are 26th and 28th November and 4th December.

Meet at the Student Hub at noon and transport will be provided to the Lok'n'Store in Gillingham.
